The official removal of Cuba from the list of State Sponsors of Terrorism was confirmed on May 29th, by the Department of State after a brief grace period prescribed by law, following President Barack Obama’s Congressional notification. The inclusion of Cuba on this list was an obsolete remnant of Cold War policy that had no place in the American continent.
Cuban Americans for Engagement (CAFÉ) celebrates the United States government’s just action and embraces it as a concrete step in the progression of respectful and concordant relations between our two countries. This measure reduces the existing barriers to fruitful exchange between two neighboring countries with strong historic, social, and cultural ties, and is a welcomed change by the citizens of both nations.
From its foundation, Cuban Americans for Engagement has supported and defended a policy of exchange between our two countries, based on the principles of international law and on the respect for human rights. It’s time that Cuba and the United State establish pragmatic relations, with fluid exchange, bilateral commerce, and diplomatic cooperation.
